Living close to the beach at Brickyard Lane, we obviously see many strange sights, the worst being a body shortly after arriving here 30 years ago (but not the last since then). Some of the sun worshippers display bodies that look as if they gave up years ago, but this morning, through the mist, there was a person dressed in what appeared to be a black cloak with hood, who was standing erect, but with head bowed like priest of old. After standing there for several minutes, the person walked further out across the beach and took up a similar position. I thought it must be the grim reaper trying to remember where he'd left his scythe after a hard nights work! Normally it's only me on the beach at 0700hrs, but now it's summer, there were 5 people and 8 dogs, even all the way out to the tide. Anyway, still a few birds with a good wader movement over 40minutes: Knot 58>S in 3 groups Redshank 17>S accompanied by 2 spotshanks. Turnstones's 19>s in 1 group Bar-tailed godwit 7 Arctic Skua >2 dark phase on beach and then south Dunlin 3 Sanderling 16 Oyster Catcher 8 Curlew 12 Gannet 5>S close to shore Common Scoter 5 on sea. Shelduck 5>S Sandwhich Terns 6, the large numbers of the previous week having moved on. Arctic Terns heard >SW last evening high up. Terns often leave overland to the SW on autumn evenings. This, and yesterday morning were the first since April that no warblers were heard singing in the buckthorn. Many juvenile whitethroats present last week, have now left, so summer is moving on. However, 3 turtle doves are still holding territory and 1 pair appear to be nesting in the garden, because we're woken each morning by the male's calls in a tree by the bedroom window. Further up the coast on the Donna Nook NNR around HT this morning there weren't any people just seals and birds. 8 Artic Skuas were at times resting on the beach or chasing terns, there was a good selection of waders including 45 Golden Plover, 3 Grey Plover, 1 Knot, Ringed Plover, Sanderling, Dunlin, 1 Bar-tailed Godwit, 9 Whimbrel, Curlew and 1 Turnstone. A Red-throated Diver flew north and a Short-eared Owl was hunting the marsh. Geoff |
