At 6pm today several groups of flying ants took to the wing on our small housing estate at Market Rasen. There was a mixed flock of 100+ Black-headed and Common Gulls enjoying the feast together with about 50 Starlings and a similar number of mixed hirundines and Swifts. Through my binoculars I was surprised to see 2 Hobbies at some altitude apparently feeding on the ants and ignoring the hirundines. Has anyone else witnessed this behaviour? |

Stuart, I witnessed exactly the same over my house in Lincoln at 6pm with just the single hobby that gave fantastic views hawking the flying ants for over half an hour. Again the hobby was feedin very busily on the wing but ignored nearby hirundines. |

No Hobbys yet but feeding started at 1700 - 1900. See report on General Birding My Garden thread. Fantastic stuff! John |
