A Mew Gull - North American Common Gull - was present on the Tip Pit at Kirkby for a few minutes this afternoon while it had a quick bath. It was the opposite side of the pit and in the midst of hundreds of Herring and LBB Gulls. I recognised it as a possible Mew Gull due to dainty rounded head, short bill and dark mantle. Probably a 3cy bird as no white seen in outer primaries - however views were poor. And I didn't notice it fly off as I was struggling with Monica's camera (not suitable for digiscoping!) trying to get a record shot. I did manage to get an image which, on viewing at home, shows a pale eye, which together with the other features, pretty much says it for Mew Gull. Colin Jennings will post the photo for me tomorrow. There were no other Common gulls present for comparison so it may be worth checking every Common Gull at Kirkby for the next few days. An adult Caspian Gull and 3 YL Gulls ( first juv ) were also present.
