First recently fledged cuckoo here this morning close to Brickyard Lane. Between 3 and 4 pairs of cuckoos have held territories along the reserve this year.
Also first recently fledged turtle doves. 2 youngsters from 1 pair, but since other males are all calling, they probably failed on first attempts. Apart from the weather, magpies and crows are very numerous and take tolls on the doves.. There were 34 crows on beach this morning, along with 6 magpies, but 20 magpies in bushes as well.
Young barn owls also being very active now in our nest box, which overlooks the reserve.

Looking across the beach this morning, there were 24 gannets north along the tide edge in calm conditions, 3 c.scoters and 30+ sandwich terns.

Regards
Cliff
