Post subject:  Reported: Nightjar at Gib Point - May 15th

Reported By: Elaine Redman

Species Information: Nightjar

Location Information: Gibraltar Point

Bird Information: On leaving the reserve at around 2130 after a late evening visit, my partner applied the car brakes after seeing what we both first thought was a very young rabbit cowering in the middle of the road, around 100 yds from the visitor centre car park. On inching the car forward, we were both surprised to find ourselves face to face with a stunning Nightjar aided by the full beam of the car lights. After a short 'face off' it took to the air, its rapid wing beat and eratic flight style taking it over the car and into the dark. What a fabulous sight to end our evening! Plus a unexpected addition to our year list. Other birds seen included two Short-eared Owls and a Barn Owl.
