RBA reports that one Black-winged Stilt is at RSPB Frampton Marsh this morning.
Perhaps the original bird returning?

Yes, it is the original bird. I thought North Scrape was starting to look quite good, but we were still surprised to find a stilt there this morning. Presumably it is the Paxton Pits bird having returned, although I've not seen any photos to confirm. Two at Minsmere today could be the pair that were here on Saturday.

Also at Frampton this morning;
Curlew sandpiper - 4
Little stint - 1
Little ringed plover - 2
Ruff - 11
Greenshank - 1
Little gull - 3 1st summers
Garganey - 3 drakes
Short-eared owl - 1

Cheers,

Ian D & John

Despite the weather, I spent another enjoyable afternoon today (BH Mon) Stilt-watching, etc., at Frampton Marsh RSPB. At least, now we are into May, the rain is getting warmer.

The presumed Frampton/Paxton /Frampton BW Stilt performed well, mainly in the wet meadows (L and R of the road) towards the seabank. It was still showing well as I was preparing to leave at c.5.00pm.
Highlights also included :

Drake Garganey showing well out in the open (for once) on a pool in the wet meadows
Ruff - a group of 5 dropped down in front of me, incl. males in their varied, gaudy (nearly) summer plumage.
Female Goldeneye still
Little Gull - 3 1st summers (From the Visitor Centre)
Yellow Wagtail.

Pleased to meet up again with Terry W. We talked about his recent trip to Scotland - look forward to seeing the full details on the web in due course, Terry. :D

Freddy
PS. I never seem to come away disappointed from Frampton Marsh RSPB. There is ALWAYS something 'good' to see, the RSPB staff are friendly and informative plus their 'scopes are usually at the ready to show something interesting; the Visitor Centre and the Hides are first-class. Congratulations to John Badley, Senior Site Manager, and his team for running such an interesting and welcoming Reserve. :D :)

Freddy,

I second your comments regarding the excellence of the Frampton reserve and the RSPB staff/volunteers,
I only wish that we lived closer as the travelling time for us is about 80 minutes each way, but I expect this is the same for many of the county birders with Lincs. covering such a large area.

I wonder what the next Frampton 'biggy' will be?
I dream of a Willett, but that is being rather too ambitious!

Perhaps something from the east might be more likely - Sharp-tailed Sandpiper perhaps?

Frampton is one of the best, if not the best nature reserve in Lincolnshire? It's not just the rarities its the less common birds e.g Pintail, scaup, Corn bunting. Also the numbers of birds especially in winter. It would be interesting to see what people views are on the best place to birdwatch on our big county ??

I have been to Frampton just 4 times but it has given me 11 Lifers and one of those trips didn't provide me with a lifer. If it were closer I'm sure I would go more often than I do.

Next big one for Frampton, Black-winged Pratincole or Pallid Harrier [-o<

My house is just five miles away from the reserve, and what with the Witham/Haven running adjacent, the scrapes, the hides etc... it's marvellous!

We've got a spare bedroom at home for guests and I'll ask my parents if they'd be happy to let any of you stay a couple of nights to go birding in the area.

The 'Frampton' BW Stilt wasn't mentioned on the web yesterday (8th May) but one was reported at Paxton Pits NR, Cambs again at 11.00 yesterday.......presumably the 'Frampton' bird returning......ie. the presumed Frampton/Paxton/Frampton/Paxton bird. :)

One wonders whether it'll commute back to Frampton again. :D if so, it would become........

Freddy
PS. Believe it or not, the 'Paxton' BW Stilt was reported as "gone missing" early afternoon today (Wed).
