An inauspicious start to May became marginally better today. Brambling and Fieldfare were commensurate with the weather on 1st, there was a Tree Pipit and Short-eared Owl on 2nd and the same Short-eared Owl, a Redstart and the first Garden Warbler on 3rd. The highlight today was an all too briefly seen Wryneck at 1040. It was feeding on short turf south of the Coastguard Cottages before undulating low across the buckthorn towards the houses. Despite waiting awhile, I did not see the bird again. Earlier, I had a Great Skua that came along the mudflats from the south at 0950. It gave brief chase to a Shelduck and then settled on the sandbar near the tide-line where it was still present half an hour later. 3 Ring Ouzels were noted, (one male and 2 females), one of the females in the company of a Redwing and a Fieldfare.
