| Post subject: | Cormorant ar Kirkby on Bain |
This morning whilst in the hide at Kirkby on Bain an odd looking Cormorant flew in with several others. It appears to be of the subspecies Phalacrocorax Sinensis (see Photo Album). I have not seen this subspecies before - is it a "Rare Bird" in Lincolnshire? |

Not rare Trevor but uncommon. |

2 of 5 Corrmorants at Boultham mere this morning were of the race sinensis. |

Initially, it was thought that only ssp sinensis had started to breed and colonise inland waters. Research has shown that about 70% of inland breeders are sinensis whilst 30% are carbo. See "Sub-specific differentiatiation of Great Cormorants" by Newsom et al 2004. |

There is one of Europes largest inland Cormorant breeding sites at Besthorpe, just over the County border in Notts. A large percentage of the birds breeding here are C.c. sinensis and knowing how far cormorants will travel for feeding grounds I suspect that quite a few of these are seen at Lincs sites. David |
