Post subject:  Wrangle marsh Eiders
An extraordinary 1480 Eider on the sea at high tide this morning. Have similar flocks been seen elsewhere on the Wash? Is this connected to the recent bitter weather?

Hi,

Adrian White reported 3400 off Leverton to Gib Point and 14 Velvet Scoter on the same day. Presumably some of these were the same birds.

I must admit I don't think we have a very good understanding of eider or scoter numbers in the Wash. Shellfish availability is clearly a factor along with the weather. Unfortunately often they are too far out see or count, so WeBS will not do these species justice.

We could do with a specialist survey plane, fitted with a high definition video camera.

Anyone reading this thread with access to one please get in touch.

Thinking about it, there seems to be a number parked up at RAF Waddington at the moment.... :D
