A flock of 12 Bullfinches near the entrance to Walesby Moor at 0900 today - probably the most I've seen together at one time! |

Everywhere I've been this winter at which you would normally see one pair has produced at least 6. Interesting to know where they have all come from? David |

Stuart, A few winters ago there were 10+ Bullfinches feeding on seed in the field on the left just before the Caravan Park at Walesby Moor - accompanied by 20+ Lesser Redpoll plus a few Mealies.......they all became quite an attraction. Did you notice any Redpoll with the Bullfinches on this occasion and were the latter in the same seed field ? (I believe the seeds were mustard). Freddy PS. I've just checked my diary notes : 28 Jan 06 : Walesby Moor : Mustard seed field : 20+ Lesser Redpoll plus 4 Mealy Redpoll. 13 Bullfinches - 9 males and 4 females......also into February. |

Freddie, Seasons greetings! There were no Redpolls and the Bullfinches were about 200 metres Walesby side of that field in the hedge opposite the pair of cottages. I've just been told that one Mid-Lincs RG ringer caught 14 new Bullfinches and 1 re-trap in a garden near Washingborough Sewage Treatment Works yesterday! The latest BTO Newsletter confirms that they had the best ever breeding season since Constant Effort ringing started in the early 1980's which may help answer David's query. Best wishes, Stuart |
