Today I checked a few sites in the Colsterworth area that I hadn't visited before:

Twyford Wood- A large wood on an old airfield site with wide concrete runways and grassy area managed by the Forestry Commission for butterflies. Birds of note: 4 Marsh Tits, 5 Siskins, 3 Crossbills flying over, 15 Fieldfare, 12 Redwing, 3 G-S and 1 Green Woodpecker. It looks like it should be good for warblers in the Summer.

Colsterworth Landfill Site - I estimated 20 Red kites here. Some with wing tags, most without, but counting was very difficult as they were coming and going all the time. Also rough estimates of 300 Chaffinches and 50 Pied Wagtails. 5 gull species on the pit or on adjacent fields (b-h, common, herring, l-b-b and g-b-b)

Stoke Rochford Park - I walked into the park and found a Nuthatch and 4 Bramblings on the many mature beech trees (my first this winter).Huge numbers of Long-tailed Tits - one flock contained 30+ there must have been at least 50 altogether On the lake were 30 Mallard, 2 Tufted Duck, 3 Teal, 10 Little Grebe and a Grey Wagtail

54 species in total

Further to Hugh's post, I visited the Colsterworth Landfill Site (Stainby Tip) late morning today (Friday). Within the first 10 minutes or so, I had noted at least 12 Red Kites.

I found the best viewing point to be on the minor road to the N of the Tip running NE from Buckminster and where one could pull off the road at a blanked-off entrance to the old Quarry/Tip. From there, close to Trig Point 138 as marked on Ord Survey Map 130 at SK 903245, I regularly had 6-8 Red Kites in the air together, quite close, with several at more or less eye level as from that viewing point one is looking down at the Tip in the old Quarry.

If one is looking to see Red Kite close to, in Lincs, this site is a must and in suitable weather conditions is virtually guaranteed to provide a sighting over the late autumn/winter months ahead.

I found that sending the wing-tagged information to KTPedersen AT snm.ku.dk produced the quickest results?

Visited site 6th November am. At least 12 Red Kite around - probably more - impossible to count because of the constant movement of birds. Spectacular close views throughout visit. Not only the tip itself but the surrounding fields all had kites. 3 more on High Dyke side of Colsterworth and 4 buzzard on the trip back to Ancaster. Quite a morning, if you haven't been make the effort! Thanks Freddy for the location details.
Dave Purnell.
