Ring-necked Duck at south end of LWT hide pit this morning. Third consecutive year that one has appeared here at this time - could it be the same one as it seems odd that a different vagrant would appear here regularly!

Good find Trevor. I too thought it might be the same bird that has returned but the bill markings are not nearly as bright as in the one I photographed last year, however, that picture was taken in late October
on a fairly bright day.

If it is the same bird, I wonder where it spends its summers?

Thanks Roy, however I don't claim full credit for the find. When I went to the hide this morning I saw in the book that Keith Robinson (Robertson?) had noted a possible last evening but couldn't be sure in the fading light. That led me to search for the bird but having found it there was difficulty in getting a reasonable photo because it remained stubbernly at the south of the hide with sun directly behind it! However it may honour us with its presence for a while and give some better views.

It does seem strange that one has arrived here at about the same time for three consecutive years and the previous two have stayed for a few weeks. If they are the same bird one wonders where it goes for the remainder of the year because I don't recall reports of sightings of the species. If we have different birds it seems a massive coincidence that more than one very rare vagrant can come to rest in the same spot (and not obviously on the route from North America).

No sign of the RN Duck this afternoon, in a brief search.

Only bird of note was a Black tailed Godwit, in front of the hide.

The previous records for RN Duck were as follows - adult male on 12-19 Sept 98 - DJ
- 1st winter male 24th Jan 99 - DJ
