Our small colony of breeding House Martins (5 pairs) finally left on 23/09. One nest site failed by collapse during July and was abandoned. Tawny Owl heard on 27/09 (23.00) Previous records confirm this is normal at the end of September and into October. They then seem to go quiet until the end of the year. We now have a charm of Goldfinches has exceeded 40 in number for the first time. Rooks are stripping a local mature Horse Chestnut tree of conkers which they carry away in their beaks. Interestingly they do not seem interested in fallen ones that are either intact in their spiny cases or have split exposing the conker.
