These past few days, some of the migrants at Swanpool seem to have disappeared by late morning so I decided to arrive by 9.00 this morning. There was no wind and the drizzle had stopped. The decision was well rewarded. In the Elders/Hawthorns near the Catchwater Drain bridge : Spotted Flycatcher 1 - performing on/off the whole of my visit (up to 10.00) Lesser Whitethroat 1 Whitethroat 3 with Swallows - up to 25 perched on dead Elder branches and House Martins whizzing past plus incl. Yellowhammer adult and 3 juveniles (with the adult harassing the Spot Fly occasionally) Goldfinch 25/30+ around. The Lesser Whitethroat/Whitethroats had disappeared by c 9.30. Freddy |

Update - 31 August I arrived somewhat earlier today at the Catchwater Drain bridge area (0745 - 0915). Fewer migrants were around the Elders/Hawthorns than yesterday : Willowchiff 2 Whitethroat 1 plus the usual Swallows and House Martins. At the end of my visit, on the way back to the car, and just S of the Drain bridge, a Spotted Flycatcher flitted across the path. It landed on an oak sapling and began flycatching for a few minutes, before disappearing through the trees and bushes. A nice surprise. ![]() Freddy |
