Normally I only see these in groups of 5-8 but saw 27 in one group today at the edge of a turf meadow close to Marston STW.

Partridge (and Hare) shooting take place two or three times every autumn/winter in the fields overlooked by some of our upstairs windows at BBH. I've also noticed an increase in RLPs in those fields of late.....recently released, presumably, as the numbers are now over and above those of the post breeding coveys.

Mind you, the shooters don't come quite so close to our house anymore since an incident two or three years ago when we witnessed a number of guns potting away at a Hare below which still managed to make it to and through the hedges (albeit probably wounded).....urged on, doubtlessly, by Inga's having opened a window and delivered some loud and clear messages to the shooters below " to depart " or words to that effect...she'd become quite emotional. Some of the shooters would have possibly liked to have taken a potshot at her, too, but at least they would have wanted a rebate on their day's shooting fee after her few words of 'encouragement'.

.....and now, having passed the so called 'glorious 12th' (August), the England Partridge shooting season begins on 1st September, in just one week's time, and then, Pheasant and Woodcock from 1st October. The birding at the Wasps Nest corner of Nocton Fen can sometimes take on a different character from 1st September, becoming somewhat noisier and more crowded, especially on Saturdays. :(
