Add Redshank and Turnstone to that wader list from Freiston (reservoir not lagoon). Sorry, forgot. Thanks, Matt |

Hello Matthew Interesting to read your wader records from Freiston/Cut End my "neck of the woods" as they say! I was able to record both Little Stint and Curlew Sandpiper there on 2 August. Both were with a flock of Dunlin about 260 in number. I have found such singles can be easily overlooked and difficult to separate particularly when the light is poor. The Little Stint was more than likely a young bird. I particularly noticed that the white breast was suffused with buff. It only took to the wing very briefly when a Canada decided to crashland alongside the Dunlin and briefly showed a narrow white wing-bar, but it was not very conspicuous. Why do the American's refer to them as "Peeps"? What an aweful name for so delightful a shore bird. The Curlew Sandpiper was a somewhat scruffy individual. How nice it would have been in breeding plumage! I suspect this may also have been a juvenile. Kind regards George |
