I found another pair of Spotted Flycatchers today in a small wood west of Kirton Lindsey feeding three very recently fledged young, sitting in a bunch on a high oak branch. These were apparently the first seen in SK99 during the atlas! (Apart from being a private site, Freddy, you would need a car built in a previous millenium to get there.) On the way home, I called at Messingham SQ - a very rare event for me - having noticed that SE90 was missing several species. My visit was rushed and the only ones I added as confirmed breeders were Collared Dove at the farm shop near the entrance, and a Shoveler duck with six downy young in front of Duck Hide. But I also noticed singing Sedge & Garden Warblers, amazingly missing from the confirmed list in SE90. Surely someone who has visited Messingham since April 2008 has noticed one of those carrying food or with fledged young? I also passed an actively feeding Spotted Flycatcher in the conifers in what appears to be called Zone 16, giving all the impression of being one of a pair; this species is recorded for SE90 in the atlas but with no breeding code. Maybe a regular visitor could confirm that they are breeding and either enter it on the atlas website or let us know here. Andrew |

Hi Andrew,i know for certain that all the species you have mentioned have bred at MSQ,successfully in recent years,as i have seen them all with young. The best person to speak to is Wayne Gillatt, who regularly does BBS surveys at the site. Regards Steve. |

When you say farm shop do you mean the stables, only farm shop I know of is at Cleatham x-roads? John |

Not sure if this is relevant to Lincolnshire Bird Reports, but it is to the west of the road a short way to the north of the reserve entrance and has a sign with large lettering saying Melcot Nurseries Farm Shop. I have never bought anything there but expect that it provides exceptional value as well as juvenile Collared Doves. Andrew |
