A lone adult avocet stands on exposed mud in a quite reed pool. I scan for signs of it's young as I know she used to have some. The adult begins to call, a piping noise and from between the forest of reeds 3 little ones run towards the parent. They arrive individually but soon they are all around the adult's long legs pushing to get close. In a moment more I can only see the bottom of the youngsters bellies and they are safe (can't see them can't see me scenario). The parent stands, it has 8 legs and I just can't help saying ooooooooooooooooooooor.
