Singing on the wet heath at Linwood Warren at 4p.m. today whilst I was checking the nest boxes. So far it looks a good breeding year for both Blue and Great Tits. |

Have noticed on my travels how well all tit species seem to have done, particularly today at Messingham, with a post breeding flock of about 30 birds which included Great,Blue,Coal,Long-tailed and 3 Willow. Regards Steve. |

I also saw a large flock of Tits in Woodhall Spa on 10th June, comprising Great, Blue, Coal and Long-tailed. I wasn't sure if they were all juveniles, as I thought I did see an adult Great Tit, but I may have been mistaken. Does anyone know if these flocks are all juveniles with the adults busy elsewhere raising a second brood? The flocks of Starlings I see around Woodhall are both adult and juvenile, so do they not raise a second brood? The BTO website section on Birdfacts says they have 1-2 broods, so I'm puzzled (as usual). Robert |

Tit flocks contain both adults and juveniles. From my experience, box nesting Tit species are single brooded unless the first brood fails - then they will lay again. Juvenile Starlings are dependent upon their parents for food for a short period after fledging. Starlings can be double brooded so I assume they lay again when the first brood is independent. |
