Post subject:  BTO Bird Race in Nth Lincs 29 April 2011

Took part in the above on 29 April, searching SE70 for breeding birds.

Spent some time around Epworth Turbary, which had good numbers of singing warblers - 7 Blackcaps, 5 Chiffchaff, 5 Whitethroat, 2 Willow Warbler, Garden Warbler and Lesser Whitethroat. Surprised to find 3 Whimbrel feeding in a field just to the west of the reserve. There was a good variety of waterbirds along the River Trone and the adjacent dykes, including singing Reed and Sedge Warbler, 2 pairs of Gadwall and 5 Tufted Duck.

A walk around Belton added a Hobby feeding with or upon a group of House Martins.

Stopped off at the new wetland site at Auborn on the way north and picked up a Common Sandpiper and a summer plumaged Grey Plover alongside the more expected waders. There were at least a dozen Lapwings with 3 or 4 young broods, plus singing Chiffchaff, Blackcap and Whitethroat.

Apologies for the delayed post.

Cheers,

David Cohen
