My first visit to Huttoft Pit this year, It looked really quiet but then a nice looking Purple Heron appeared on the far side of the pool and continued to show well for at least an hour.
Just had a text from Steve Meek, still here at 2.18 pm.

Once again I found myself at the south end of Donna Nook in quad 3 when I got news of a good bird in the county - I was in almost exactly the same spot when news of the Isabelline Shrike at Gib. was put out last year, this meant that I was over a mile from my car! I managed to get to Huttoft Pits in an hour but it was still not in time to see the Purple Heron showing at its best. Geoff had already left when I arrived with just Michael Tarrant and Barry Clarkson in the hide. The bird had showed along the far edge of the lagoon before I got there but between 1.20 pm and 1.50 pm it was always obscured by reeds when it could be seen with the best views obtained when it was in flight. At 1.52 pm the Purple Heron flew into dense cover to the left of the hide and had been out of view for a while when I left.

Earlier, I had been to Pyes Hall and seen little of note other than a Short-eared Owl, 4 Wheatears and a couple of Chiffchaff.
The south end of Donna was almost as uninspiring although I did see and hear a Cuckoo.
Steve Lorand mentioned that he had a singing Nightingale in Quad 2 today and a Hooded Crow in Quad 3.

Well done again to Geoff for yet another good find in Lincs.!

Roy
