08.15 Friday 8/4............. Crane in field east of Anwick this morning. 1/2 mile out of Anwick towards North Kyme in field on left. Driving so not able to stop or get bins on it, it was stalking through crops. My passenger thought he saw another! What a great start to the day! Bob |

Have you ruled out the escaped 2 Rhea's that have been in that area for a while?...just a thought. |

We also suspected that Bob had seen a Greater Rhea then Radio Lincolnshire said there is an Emu running around on Anwick Fen! We could find no Crane, Rhea or Emu at Anwick Fen so drove down to Dorrington Fen where two Rheas have been present for several months. We found one Rhea at Dorrington and learned that the second bird had been missing for a few days. This all leads us to think that a Greater Rhea was seen by Bob and it's notable that the Rheas were identified as Cranes last year too. Regards, Colin and Sheila |

At 2 to 3 hundred yards your probably right. Is there a list (apart from forum) of escaped birds to be found anywhere? |

The two Rheas have been around for over a year, and attempted to breed last year. The fact that only one is being seen regularly suggests that the other may be sitting again. HOWEVER, I am now informed that one was ordered by the police to be shot as they considered it posed a safety risk as it was close to the road. I am trying to get confirmation as to whether this is true. It seems a shame..........I wouldn't have thought they would pose any greater risk than a fallow deer for instance. Alan |
