At 6am today there were 16 Whoopers on the Reed Bed and 46 on the Scrapes. At about 8am they flew off North West. The whooping gradually decreased but as they flew further away it increased again, and I realised that lots more were flying in from the salt marsh. 95 landed on the Reed Bed so the grand total was 157, an amazing sight and sound.

Cheers Jonathan

Still 111 left on the reserve late afternoon, great views and quite a sight.

Also today;

Scaup - female (not sure if the male was reported)
Marsh harrier - 4
Hen harrier - 1
Peregrine - 1
Sparrowhawk - 2
Kestrel - 4
Little owl - 2
Ruff - 10+ including one male already attaining breeding plumage and acting 'fruitily'
Avocet - 20+ with lots of frutiness
Little gull - 1st winter
Swallow - 1 (first of the year here)
Sand martin - 1
Chiffchaff - 2
White wagtail - reported on Birdguides
Twite - 39 around 360 hide, including at least two colour-ringed birds and quite a few pink rumps between them
Corn bunting - 2 singing already. One very tame by the 360 hide

WeBS count tomorrow...

Cheers,

John

#-o

Guess I chose the wrong day to walk to Tab's Head... 3 Eiders there. 2 drakes and a female. No fruit basketry in sight up there. Whoopers in very good voice when I returned exhausted to my waiting chauffeur (Dad). Meadow Pipits everywhere.
