Alastair,
The female was on the nest in the submissive and receptive position -neck extended- and so encouraging the male.

Yeah, I was only joking, but it was quite funny how fast the male moved to mate!

You're right, Alastair.
As we chess players might say - male Grebe to move and mate in one.

Haven't heard of that saying, but does it mean that you do 2 things in 1?

Good question, Alastair.
As you may know, towards the end of a chess game, a player's King will come under attack. The ultimate aim of the game is to trap one's opponent's King so that, according to the rules, he cannot move to any other square - that being called checkmate (frequently shortened to mate) from the Persian 'Shah Mat', literally meaning 'The King is defeated/dead.'

So, when there remains just one move to checkmate/mate the King, we say,for example, Bishop to move to such and such a square, followed by the killer move - ie. "mate in one" after the Bishop's move.

Freddy
PS. .....Of course, when GCGrebes mate, that involves a different sort of move.
I also have a distinct feeling that as a result of the present chatty nature of this thread, we shall also have a move - to the Lincs Bird Chat section and, why not, it's less crowded there, with lots of fresh air. :D
