Yesterday, 13/02/2011 during WeBs survey of Nocton Fen:

With Mute swan herd, 3 Bewick's swans, one wearing a yellow neck collar. Very poor light conditions prevented my reading the number apart from deciphering A as the final character. I can't get back to read it in the next few days. Can anyone else with access permission check it out? If you can get there but lack permission ring me on 01526 351197, so I can give you contact details. I have submitted my information to BirdForum.

Also on 13/02/2011 on Martin Fen, north side of Martin South Drove, B1191, about 1 mile east of Martin village, in the Mute Swan herd were 11 adult and 1 immature Whooper plus two adult Bewick's.

note 1: This project was started in 1989. The total number of birds marked in this project is 382 (293 in The Netherlands and 89 in Germany). Catching has been done mainly between 1992 and 1997. The last catch was made in March 2000. Since then 5 more birds have been marked by Axel Degen during cathing of Whooper Swans in Germany. In winter 2006/2007 the total number of Bewick's Swans still wearing a yellow neckcollar of this project has decreased to about 20 individuals. Probably this number will increase again during the years to come as Axel Degen will continue this project in the (very) near future.

note 1 : There are now over 130 Bewick’s Swans carrying a yellow neck collar with the codes 901A-999A and 001E-199E. The Netherlands Institute of Ecology is extremely interested in observing their foraging behaviour during the winter, as well as their migration patterns throughout the rest of the year.

The neck coded swan still today plus one other - couldn't see the third - they were some distance away. 41 ofr 42 mute swans around also

Lots of pochard and tufted duck on the sugar beet pit

At least 5 kestrel about plus 1 curlew and redshank

Thanks Russell & Chris. I have an atlas square to do on that corner of Nocton Fen as soon as a I get a sunny morning when I'm free, so I'll see if it's still around then.

This bird was ringed in The Netherlands on 17th December 2008. It's been seen many times in winter commuting between The Netherlands and Denmark and was also seen in Poland in spring 2010. On 21st and 28th December 2010 it was in Denmark, then at Nene Washes over 3rd December to 27th January before turning up at Nocton Fen.
