Post subject:  Ring-necked Parakeet

In order to try and establish the status of this species in the county I am doing a trawl of records -- most are not published so if anyone has proven records of Ring-necked rather than parakeet sp could they put them on this thread with date and locality --- Records for 2008 and 2009 in the LBR below
Thanks

2008 report
Rose-ringed Parakeet (Ring-necked Parakeet) Psittacula krameri
Rare. Vagrant from feral populations and occasional local escapes.
Still no sign of establishment in the county. Early in the year, one was in Weelsby Woods on Feb 5th-12th. Later, one was
nearby at Humberston Fitties and Tetney Marsh on Aug 2nd-6th, and perhaps the same bird re-appeared at Humberston Fitties
on Nov 13th. At the far end of the county, one was at Bourne on Oct 30th.

2009
Singles were present at Humberston Fitties on Mar 21st and at Wheelsby Woods on Mar 29th. At Tetney Marsh singles were seen on Jul 3rd-6th and Dec 20th and 2 were present on Dec 21st. Although now common in the Home Counties, there is still no significant feral population in Lincolnshire, and some birds are presumed to relate to local escapes.

Hi Graham,

From the gnarled archives, one flew north along the east dunes at Gib Point in May 1976, exact date lost with the notebook it was in. I don't think I submitted it anywhere as in that century we probably thought they were all out of cages rather than the product of a feral breeding population,

A timely record ! - we will be entering archive 1976 data in the next couple of months from the old paper Observatory logs.

It is worth noting that small numbers of Alexandrine parakeets are also on the loose - there was one at Gib for a while that was initially thgought to be a ring-necked - it is not always easy to see the red on the lesser coverts. Seem to recall it had a much chunkier bill than ring-necked too.

There have been other interesting visitors here more recently since the Parrot Sanctuary established ...a blue form ring-necked parakeet, African grey parrot, red-fronted conure etc

an Alexadrine spent several weeks at Barton pits one autumn and a Monk Parakeet was also around one spring so there is potential for confusion on simple fly by parrots which is always worth bearing in mind
