28 Jan 2011 08.40 Outer Circle Road flock now at least 120 strong. Seen on tree tops at junction with Bishops Road. Quite a few cotoneaster bushes/trees in area with lots of berries. Also, about 400 pink-feet over NW in same area at 08.36. Cheers Brian |

Deacon Road actually joins the Outer Circle Road and, fortunately, the Bishops Road area is visible from Deacon Road. Yesterday (Thu 27 Jan), the Waxwing flock took off at one stage from Deacon Road, flew to the Bishops Road area and settled in some trees there. Through binoculars I could see them dropping down to an alternative berry source beside a long black industrial shed building, before some returned to Deacon Road. They could well be commuting regularly between the two areas. I must investigate further. ![]() Regards, Freddy |

I decided to spend some time in the Bishops Road/Deacon Road (Outer Circle Road) area today (c.11.45 - 12.45). I drove around the circuit two or three times (interspersed with some walking) but saw NO Waxwings. I did, however, notice a particularly fine berry tree at the junction of Bishops Road with Proctors Road. What I also discovered was that the long black industrial shed building noted yesterday is actually between Bishops Road and Deacon Road. From the UPS Depot I could see some Waxwings dropping down from trees to feed there. As the sun came out, I sat on a wall back on Deacon Road by the UPS Depot and at c.12.10 the first Waxwings flew in. By the time I left at 12.45, the flock had built up to c.70 birds - similar to yesterday's figure there and at about the same time, too. Regards, Freddy |

John, Bore da! Great news that others are now seeing such good numbers at the UPS Depot. We've lost the Railway Station flock in Lincoln but gained an even bigger one at UPS. As we used to say in Llanelli during the War - " A Diwrnod da iddi ti !" Freddy |

Further to my Waxwing Winter Project, I visited the Deacon Road (UPS Depot)/Outer Circle Road/Bishops Road area this morning (Sunday) 10.30 -12.05pm. I did a few circuits and had to wait a bit before bumping c.30 Waxwings at the Bishops Road/Proctors Road junction berry trees at c. 11.00, with a few other birders. I was back at UPS on Deacon Road at 11.20, where I soon met up with Russell Hayes and Andy Sims as c45 Waxwings flew in. The rear of the Wickes area then turned up just 1 perched Waxwing not far from Russell's Apple tree (photo in LBC Photo Album Sat 29 Jan) and the area where Russell and Andy had connected with c90 Waxwings earlier today. I finished the morning back at UPS where one other birder and I watched as c.30 Waxwings flew in at 11.50 - they were still there as I left at around midday. Chasing Waxwings in Lincoln this winter has certainly had its UPS and DOWNS, but it's definitely UPS at the moment especially on Deacon Road. ![]() ![]() Good numbers of Fieldfare(25+) and Redwing(20+) on the circuit, as well as some 10 birders encountered. About 40 waxwing by UPS until 3.30 this afternoon, together with 10+ Redwing and 4 Fieldfare, but quite elusive. I found them on Proctor Road at about 2.30 when they immediately flew off towards UPS. A quick return to UPS found them disappearing West over Tesco car park. They did return after a short while but dropped down somewhere on the estate. Occasionally the flock circled but never settled (at least near me). At about 3.15 they appeared outside UPS for 5 minutes before flying off over Tesco once more. Still plenty of berries to go at. A male Sparrowhawk crashing into the UPS berry tree and moving everything on, was the only other bird of note. |

A count of the Waxwings from a photo taken yesterday shows a revised count of 142 present. Plus 1 unidentified bird top right of picture that was smaller than the rest. ![]() |
