Few birders about today - bumped into Derek, James and Dean Eades. Also a lot of game shooting in the area with Red-legged Partridges being the main target.

Wasps Nest:
Brambling amongst the Chaffinch
2 Tree Sparrows
8 Long-tailed Tits
1 Fieldfare
1 Greenfinch

Neville Wood from 1145 to 1400:
4 Goldcrest
2 Coal Tit
2 Treecreeper
2 Nuthatch
4 Blue Tit
5 Long-tailed Tit
4 Blue Tit
2 Great Tit

Some very close views of the above!

On way home between Martin and Martin Dales (closer to Martin Dales along Timberland Delph) and viewable South from B1191 at Grid Ref TF154608:
5 Whooper Swan adults amongst 54 Mute Swans.

Amazing what a difference a few hours makes. I was down the fen from about 13:30. Couldn't find a brambling anywhere even though i must have seen over a 100 chaffinchs. Neville Wood was as quiet as a morgue

Sorry about late post:- It was nice to meet John Harry, at Neville Wood, we shared his sightings detailed above, however just before we met him we had seen a ringtail Harrier hunting over the field between Neville Wood and Burnt wood. We then proceeded through Wasp's Nest and saw a couple of Bullfinch, with the mixed finch flock, as we approached the houses. We could also add Mistle Thrush, Song Thrush, Redwing and Red Legged Patridge as we drove down the fen. A solitary Redshank was on the drain leading to the pumping station. We also saw a common Buzzard near to the pits as we returned through the fen at around 15:45 hrs.

Best Wishes and a happy and successful year to all
Derek & James
