5 Waxwings back today Sun 2nd at Witham St Hughs 1.30 pm. Same place as previous year or was it 2 years ago (I can't remember!) besides the main road running between WSH and Swinderby Airfield, just past the roundabout going towards Thulby direction. Also just out of interest I am currently every day now for the last week or so getting between 7-10 redpolls visiting my feeders at Bassingham. Previous years I havn't had any. Happy New Year Mark |

I thought I'd check out the reported Waxwings at WSH on Mon 3rd Jan (12.00 - 1.20pm), and where 2 years ago many of the Lincoln area birders enjoyed views over an extended period. No luck (45 minutes -admittedly in a heated car) at the original stakeout on the WSH - Thurlby road with its rows of berry trees, so I tried the 2009 alternative WSH Estate site - which could be of interest/practical use to others : Go down Cuckoo Walk (opposite the blocked-off entry to the Swinderby Industrial Estate -use it for parking - some 50 yards past the Roundabout), round a Children's Play Area, cross an Estate road, and go straight ahead down Thyme Walk, where at the bottom there is a ploughed field. The path goes left behind some houses and at its borders there are 6/8 Wild Rose bushes(with Hips) and Guelder Rose juicy berries, together with one or two back gardens with berry bushes : 6 Waxwings were feeding there, plus a Fieldfare, and a Redwing nearby - -well worth the extra walk and the effort. ![]() Regards, Freddy |
