A monthly update of the number of days peregrine present on St.James, Louth. There are definite signs that the two birds are bonding – they scream to each other when bringing in prey, share food and roost close together. However; the tower has been open to visitors up to Christmas (it used to be closed from the end of October). In the pub before Xmas were our neighbours (one a church volunteer) and Sue Oliver, the 'Team Vicar'. I was asked by the neighbour "how's the bird" in very disparaging tones. Team Vicar piped up "you realise the church will lose £600 if the tower has to close?". I explained about the benefits to the church if the birds nested, but nobody was convinced, so once again, I think we will have an uphill struggle to get the 'Christians' on our side. August: male 15 days + pair 1 day. September: male 17 days (calling most days) + pair 2 days. October: male 16 days (calling most days) + pair 9 days (performing spectacular display flights with raucous calling by both). November: male 17 days (seen carrying prey on 1 day) + pair 5 days + 3 on 2 days. December: male 17 days + pair 11 days. (Seen sharing a kill on one occasion and several instances of prey being butchered – favoured location is the east side of the tower on the middle gargoyle just below the walkway.) January report at end of month. Note, the birds may have been present more frequently, but not recorded by us. Geoff & Julia |

Wish I'd thought of the Ark comment! I'll use that next time. As you say, a typical Christian attitude, selfish and bigoted; glad I stopped 'believing' as soon as I was old enough to think reason for myself. Happy new year to all. Geoff |
