Two firecrests remain on the west dunes - also up to 5 goldcrests on the reserve - ie overall crest numbers are the same as prior to this latest cold weather - remarkable !

after the snow there were 2 Goldcrests in single leylandii either side of my garden and one survived on waters' Edge out of two but I did a winter survey at Laughton Forest in the week and on my area Robins were down to 1 and Wren numbers halved; after the snow melted I came across 2 dead Curlew and 2 Woodcock in 200m of the Humber bank where there had been some open grass and up to 90 Curlew had been trying to feed; Has anyone seen a surviving Kingfisher? or heard a Cetti's?

Last year we had Treecreeper on our cedar tree very regularly but after the last hard winter we haven't seen one all year in the garden, until two visits this week. Bad time for small insect eaters but this one lifted the spirits!

Graham, if you'd been around Gunby on tuesday you would have seen more than 2 dead Woodcock - around 50 were shot on ' a good shooting day for Woodcock'!! The bad weather on thursday ruined 'a good shooting day for Woodcock ' at Welton le Marsh with only a handful being killed.
I've been at Mavis Enderby shoot today ( where Woodcock are not shot ) and saw only about a dozen Woodcock along stream edges and in the middle of woods. Wonder how many will be shot next week??

In response to Graham's request for surviving Kingfishers, I can report that one, or two, were seen today at Cogglesford Mill Sleaford. Gerv Orton reports one at Pinchbeck on 9th December.

In response to Ed's note of Woodcock being shot I have to say that I find it very disappointing that anyone can shoot these birds in such harsh conditions.
