First impressions today were bareness and decay with a feel of inhospitable places on the wind. If you take all the colours of a naked hawthorn and chuck them on a thrush you get redwing and today redwing toured the scrub with their usual anxiety. Behind the frigid exterior the winter tangle rippled with bird calls, clucks and seeps, ticking and churring and a longer look revealed all manner of thrush, tits, robins and goldcrests gleaning the minatures from weathered bark. Sunshine helped the optimism and a male smew on Hotel Pit provided the reward. A goldeneye, a single siskin and a single cetti's warbler strethched the expected a touch and 24 fieldfare are always a good experience. PS - A peregrine over Chowder was reported to me yesterday. |
