A good day at Whisby and N Hykeham today (Friday) with a Firecrest in the hedgerow along the south side of Grebe Lake and a first winter White-fronted Goose on Millennium Green (one of the N Hykeham Pits) both found by Dean Nicholson. Also 2 Y-l Gull at the latter site. This is the first Firecrest for about 5 years, the last one we had wintered at Whisby, although was very elusive and difficult to find. For anyone wishing to look for it, the best advice would be to check through any roving tit flocks with which it was associating.

Yesterday (Thurs) there were 3 Red-crested Pochard on Willow Lake, along with good numbers of other wintering wildfowl. Goldeneyes have been back for around 2 weeks now with Grebe Lake and Millennium Green current favourite waterbodies. Siskin and Lesser Redpoll are seemingly everywhere, and following on from the Tree Sparrow thread up to 4 have been on the bird feeders all week. We have also had up to 2 Jack Snipe for the last fortnight, although unfortunately they are in an area with no public access.

Cheers

Grahame
