I was in the kitchen cooking this afternoon when Dean Nicholson rang to say that he had just had a Short-eared Owl fly over Boultham mere heading towards my house.
Not having seen S-e O on the patch this year I abandoned my cooking and dashed out to look for it.
Standing on the bridge over the Catchwater drain I was scanning for the owl when I heard a Waxwing call, I looked up and saw it fly out of the hedge in front of me in a wide arc and then head north towards the mere. I rang Dean who was in the hide at the mere with Paul and they both rushed out and heard and saw it as it flew past.
This was a patch tick for all three of us and puts me on 127 for the year.
