I think this may be a first for Marston STW??

Have alerted Alex Lees in deepest Brazil to the fact he is missing a local mega!

Yeah, quite gripping, no other MSTW records to my knowledge; there used to be a couple of plasticy ones hanging around nearby Denton Res. in the early '90s but they usually disgraced themselves by sticking around for months on end. This one-day threesome at an appropriate time-of-year tick all the boxes, at least given a lack of negative news on their provenance.

Andy mentioned that he had tried to speak to the management regarding habitat quality at the site, which has declined fairly consistently since I first visited nearly 20 years ago. 'In those days' we used to get up to 15 wader species on a single day. This in itself reflects a shifting baseline, given that habitat in the '80s when the site was still grazed by sheep was an order of magnitude better than the following decade, and don't get me started on how good it evidently was in the 1920s........

Ought to count up soon, the site list should be pushing 200 by now!

Alex

Interestingly I have only been visiting the site for two years and have myself seen a notable decline in quality of habitat. The reed beds in particular are silting up and it would appear unlikely that the site will for long be able to perform it's major function of tertiary sewage filtration. Perhaps this may persuade Anglian Water to attend to it's maintenance!

The White fronts were only seen for ten minutes, they flew in with a large flock of Greylags and were distinctive in the air by their smaller size. They then flew off again alone heading South West (towards Denton?) and obviously have not been seen since, it would be interesting to know where they end up for the winter.

FYI - I have been asking AW if it would be possible to mow the field between the scrape and the reedbed at Marston STW. This area is in danger of becoming overgrown by scrubland, and the open habitat used by wintering wildfowl and waders is disappearing fast. It is my opinion, that if this area is left to over grow then the wildfowl and waders will also move on.....
