Just a shame that this bird was apparently found so late in the day that most birders were unable to get there after the information was released to enjoy this superb rare shrike in the sunshine

As I understand it, the bird was found and correctly identified in the morning - after first being
thought to be a Red-backed Shrike. It came on my pager at about 3.50 p.m.

It was the same with the recent Red-breasted Flycatcher at Pyes Hall, I don't believe the finders put out the news either.(ND and GPC ?) :lol:

Just for the record and to stop the gossip mongers.

The bird was found in the morning by Tony Burgess who alerted me as I passed that he had just seen and photographed a Shrike. His images were not clear enough to ID the bird. We searched and relocated the shrike 200 yards away from where it had last been seen. Not having any experience of Isabelline Shrike, Tony and myself thought we had a Red-backed Shrike which we duly photographed. I phoned Kev Wilson to let him know and he questioned the colouration of the bird and his thoughts turned to Isabelline Shrike. It was 20-30 minutes later that Kev arrived to confirm his thoughts.
Kev said he would put the news out and as a good number of people arrived to see the bird we assumed that had happened.

Regarding the Pyes Hall Red-breasted Flycatcher, I put the news onto the pager service - with the approval of the finders.

Comments: Just to help clarify the situation regarding the Isabelline Shrike at Gib Point on 10 October. The warden, Kevin Wilson, did text the news out to me at Birdline NE to broadcast the news. Unfortunately I misread the text and assumed it was news of another Great Grey Shrike. So the bird was broadcast as a Great Grey Shrike. As a rule I put news of significant rarities I hear about, wherever they are, onto the national pager and sms services in real time. I apologise to any who were inconvenienced by the subsequent delay in the news breaking. However at the end of the day it is down to individuals actually watching the bird/s to supply updates so that we can all benefit from each others good fortune.
