Went to the outer dunes this a.m. in yet another failed attempt to locate the wryneck (will we ever see one?). Advised by a couple of birders there that it had flown 150 yards further out onto the saltmarsh. Felt like we had gatecrashed a private party so didn't search further. Returned to Pye's, then Stonebridge, and were rewarded with good views of a yellow-browed warbler with goldcrests halfway along the track. Geoff & Julia |

Further to Grahams comments, field difference between Phylloscopus trochilus (Willow Warbler) and P Collybita (Chiffchaff) is never easy. At Donna Nook today we ringed 30+ "Phylloscs" and only one was a Willow Warbler.! More interestingly, many had a wing length in excess of 67mm and are highly likely to have been the Fenno Scandinavian sub-species P collybita abietinus as another possible, P Collybita tristis has a similar wing length to the nominate race. This is an exceptional number of "big" Chiffchaffs and the highest I have come across in 30 years of autumn migration ringing. |

Have checked out your pics and the different angles clearly show its 'red-breasted' The other well-photographed flycatcher at Donna recently - the spotted flycatcher, is also of interest - it has apparnetly mixed age feather tracts on the medan coverts - including two boldly white-spotted feathers.
