At Read's Island this morning over high tide I picked out a Buff-breasted Sandpiper amongst a 500 - 600 strong very nervous mixed flock of Dunlin and Ringed Plover. The flock attempted numerous times to land on the south shore just to the west of Read's Island to roost over high tide but were very flighty and eventually left. The flock did fly past fairly close a couple of times allowing scope views of the Buff-breast in flight with the silvery white under wing seen well. As the tide fell the bird was eventually seen again at very long range feeding on the mud just to the west of the island amongst vegetation. Eventually heat haze and strong winds made it impossible to see the bird. A Buff-breast was reported on Read's Island nearly 2 weeks ago, presumably the same bird. Also present in the flock of small waders were 2 juv Sanderling and an albino Ringed Plover. regards Wayne |

Nice find Wayne and continuing the trend of local Buff-breasts as an almost annual species now!. Steve. |

the Buff-breast was showing well tonight in the gale force winds at a mere 500m range (almost as good as the Semi-p) -- at 19:05 after several short exploratory flights it started to climb to the south and was joined by 7 Ringed Plovers all 8 birds continuing to climb and move southwards until lost to view down the Ancholme Valley; this is fairly typical behaviour waders setting off on the next stage of their migration; it seems odd that the bird should have chosen to move on tonight if it has been there 2 weeks as waders are known to move over the periods of the full moon but stranger things happen. The bird was an adult and may be a returning bird as there have been several recent July-August records on the upper Humber. |

Been there 2 weeks?wayne told me he find it sat,oh well,good find nether the less,still never seen bb sandpiper,even thou its now getting to be more common,considering the rare waders ive seen over the years,e.g.-red necked stint,hudsonian godwit,white rumped s,marsh sand,bairds s,etc etc,mostly at blacktoft as i use to go there twice a week many years ago,when a greaves had it,well done wayne-another good find for our area.
