Hi Don

I have looked at your pics in the Album of Black Tern but something doesn't look right to me. The beak seems a little long and curved for Black Tern.

Best wishes

Russell

I agree,it's not a Black Tern. I had one like that on beach at Brickyard Lane,at first thought Roseate Tern but decided on adult winter Common Tern, is this correct?

It's a Common Tern that fledged last year. Not a plumage often seen in Lincolnshire I believe - so interesting from that view. Primary moult has already started and the new feathers can be clearly seen. Very interesting shot Don and perfectly excusable to missidentify as a Black Tern - although look for a dark mark at each side of the breast in Black Tern, amongst other differences, which would have shown very well in your photos.

I have changed the description on this photo to read - Common Tern 1st winter. As Ed say not a plumage that we often see in Lincs, would like to use this photo in the 2010 Lincs Report please...

Thanks

Andrew

if it fledged last year its actually second winter or second summer to be precise - the old portlandica plumage type described in BB in about 1950's? -- interestingly there were about 20 2cy Arctic Terns on Inner Farne when were there in June and that sort of number is quite unusual because of course almost all 2cy birds spend their first summer in Antartica
