interesting that 10000 moved through Spurn -- so a) do they move south over the sea and miss most of Lincs coast or b) do they turn inland after leaving the tip of Spurn; yesterday evening about 1200 moved SSW over Humberston but I was not there until 17:00hrs -- |

Swifts were moving south over a broad front at Gib on Sunday morning (4th) and were still moving in good numbers over Skegness late afternoon. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the 10,000 Spurn Swifts flew down the Lincs coast throughout the day. The 88-91 Atlas of Breeding Birds estimated 80,000 pairs in Britain then, so presuming it is a little early for there to be any juveniles amongst them, 10,000 birds represent a high proportion of British breeding Swifts feeding down the East coast on Sunday. I presume these birds had been forced eastwards by inclement weather and found good feeding on the coast where the cooler North Sea air gets under the warmer land air transporting insects skywards. Cheers, Rob. |
