Seen or heard between 12.10 - 17.40:

Little Grebe - 1, Great-crested Grebe - 2, Tufted Duck - 18, Teal - 7, Shoveler - 9, Mallard - 14 + 12 juvs, Gadwall - 13, Moorhen - 3, Coot - 37, Mute Swan - 25, Black-head Gull - 9, Redshank - 3, Water Rail - 1, Greylag - 6, Lapwing - 45, Oyk - 4, Avocet - 6, Blackcap - 4, Green Woodpecker - 1+, Chiffchaff - 2, Common Buzzard - 7, Sprawk - 1, Shelduck - 6, Pochard - 8, Kingfisher - 1, Jay - 1, Magpie - 3, Chaffinch - lots, Sand and House Martin - lots, Swallow - 2, Wood Pigeon - 3, Pheasant - 3, Blackbird - 2, Wren - 1, Blue Tit - 2, Willow Warbler - 2.

While in the Duck Hide quite a number of people asked where the BH Gulls were, I hadn't an answer, usually there are upwards of 200 or more but today they were conspicouos by their absence. Maybe someone has the answer.

Although there was a lack of numbers there was plenty to see of one sort or another.

We spent the last hour watching from the Grebe Lake seat in the hope of seeing at least one Otter, but they kept out of sight.

Another enjoyable day at my favourite reserve.

Kind regards

John :D

Chris and Rog,

Yes it was quiet for most of the time but it also felt strange not hearing the constant racket of the gulls. Doing the WeBS I would have preferred the gulls to have been there to keep the monthly count constant, but these things happen. I'll blame the bad winter

The total number of birds I counted was on the low side but that could be because I went in the afternoon rather than first thing in the morning.

In regard to the Otters I'm expecting them to put on a good show next week for those lucky enough to see them, I for one won't be one of them.

Cheers

John aka Max
