This afternoon I stopped to count the swan herd half a mile east of Martin, north side of the B1191.

Mute Swan 129
Whooper Swan 1
Bewicks Swan 2

I have assuimed all those asleep and half hidden in the oil seed rape were Mutes.

Yesterday, I stopped and scoped the same flock, and I had 108 Mutes and no other species. I was a little disappointed by this, so checked a second time, and got the same count and still ALL mutes. Again, there was a number asleep which I assumed were Mutes, this may now not have been the case!

A single immature Whooper swan has been associating with a family party of 6 mute swans feeding on a wheat field since last weekend at 'Shearmans Wath' beside the River Bain 1.5 miles upstream of Horncastle.

At 12.30 today there were 124 Mutes and 2 Whoopers.
