I have received an email from Malcolm Ash of North Thoresby with a pic
http://www.lincsbirds.co.uk/album/displ ... pos=-11806
He says:
Not too sure about the date - somewhere around mid January 2010. We had some bad weather, strong north-easterly wind, and very cold and wet. ("As the crow flies", North Thoresby is only a few miles from the sea). We found the bird in our back porch, huddled against the internal door. Our porch does have an external door, which was closed at the time. The only way the bird could have got there was through a cat-flap in the external porch door! It would be impossible for the bird to come through the cat-flap by itself so our only explanation is that our cat found the bird in our garden and brought it in to the porch through its usual access. (The cat has been known to bring the odd "live" creature into the back porch. The cat has a bell around its neck to try and "warn" birds, mice, etc that the cat's around, but the bell doesn't seem to be too much of a deterrent.)

The bird was "sat" upright, appeared to be calm, didn't struggle even when I picked it up and showed no sign of any "damage" either from the cat nor of the bird flying into any obstruction. None of its wings appeared to be damaged and it appeared to be totally all right. Rather than put it outside in the wind, cold and rain, and be at risk from predators, I put it in a cardboard box, supplied it with water, and was hoping to try and release it next morning in the daylight and hope that it would fly away. Unfortunately it died during the night. Such a beautiful little bird!

Hi John

This is a very bizarre record and one that would be great to get into the Bird Atlas (if it hasn't been submitted already)!

It reminds me of an account from Steve Lorand who one morning some years ago, found a Little Auk in a bucket of water by his backdoor at Donna Nook. Mind you there was a Little Auk wreck on at the time which was not the case in January.

Maybe Great Auks use the front door?

Good thinking. I'll get a precise site and enter the info.

John
