Water levels fairly high with corresponding increase in duck numbers, very murky: Grey Heron 1 landing in reed bed Kestrel 1 Greylag c50 Teal c70 Wigeon 39 Shoveler 7 Gadwall 12 Mallard 15 BH Gull 17 LBB Gull 1 Water rail 2 heard Blackbird 7 Great Tit 11 Blue tit 5 Wren 3 Chaffinch 4 Goldfinch 2 Reed bunting 1 And last but not least a lesser spotted woodpecker flying over main scrape into spinney behind hide. Interestingly within this spinney are a large number of dead trunks of small trees, up to 8cm dia., which have been extensively attacked by what appears to be a woodpecker, especially where there are beetle burrows. All this damage is targetted at individual holes and is from ground level up to about 1.5 m. This is the first time I have seen this amount of damage here, despite the regular sighting of a GSW, and never at ground level. Could this be the LSW or perhaps some other species. Anyone with any ideas? Regards David |
