Marton
8 Jan 2010
08.30 - 10.30
Noted at least 14 bullfinches in parties of 2 to 4 birds around Marton this morning. Not sure whether continental birds are now involved or whether they are just more obvious because of the snow and their current habit of feeding out in the open on nettle seeds.

Did my late winter visit to SK88K today (1 hour) with 34 species noted including some of the bullfinches mentioned above plus grey partridge, green woodpecker, great spotted woodpecker, snipe, tree sparrows, tufted duck and sparrowhawk.

Cheers
Brian

The number of migrant bullfinches through Gib during the late autumn was the largest number for at least 10 years with up to 10 on a couple of days. All of the ones that I saw/heard were standard individuals - the Northern Bullfinches seem to have qute a disctinct nasal or wheezing element to the piping call.

Cheers
