4 hours at Tetney (12.00-16.00) A walk from Tetney Lock to MoD Pools produced, in order of appearance: Flock of fieldfare feeding on fallen apples in a garden beyond the pub. Groups of redwing in the bushes along the canalside, also pair of reed bunting. +/- 150 golden plover with lapwings in fields on right before the outfall sluice. Water rail heard then seen in reeds on north side of canal by outfall sluice. Lapwing and redshank on mud beyond the outfall, plus solitary grey plover. +/- 350 brent gees arriving in 3 skeins from NE to feed on fields north of canal. Looking north across nature reserve from dyke, 32 shellduck and several redshanks on foreshore mud. Many redshank and curlew in tidal creeks and barn owl working the ditches around the borrow pits, also several little egret and grey heron. Fieldfare over. Peregrine on gate before MoD pools took off over fields, bringing up large flock of starling. At MoD pools, few waders due to high water levels. 2 redshank on first pool, nothing on second. Out to dunes, where large numbers of shell duck and gulls on distant foreshore. Returning, good views of barn owl again, at one point feeding on something on ditch bank. Second grey plover on tidal creek, also several curlew and many redshank, also 23 mallard taking to the wing. +/- 50 teal taking flight when 3 wildfowlers plus dogs started shooting (the wildfowlers, not the dogs) on nature reserve. Several grey plovers with redshank on mud towards Tetney Haven. Returning on north bank of canal, roadside hedges near coastguard cottages produced: Pair bullfinches, mistle thrush, several redwing and fieldfare, many blackbirds.
