A final walk over the patch for 2009. Mere still completely frozen over with only 4 Mute Swans, 1 Common & 4 Black-headed Gulls on the ice. Water Rail heard. A flock of c90 Skylarks were feeding on stubble rape field, this is the largest flock I have ever recorded on the patch. Also 1 Kingfisher, 1 Green Woodpecker, 5 Meadow Pipits on tip, c40 Goldfinches feeding on burdock, 7 Yellowhammers & 3 Reed Buntings.
I finished the year on 116 for the patch, an average year. Highlights were Little Egret, Ring-necked Duck, Scaup, Caspian Gull & Cetti’s Warbler. Species not seen included Golden Plover, Redshank, Greenshank, Turtle Dove, Little Owl, Whinchat and Sedge Warbler, all of which are generally recorded each year. Lets see what 2010 brings.
