Todays highlights so far:

Black Brant - ad (prob female) on saltmarsh with small brent flock, showing well from main steps onto seabank at 1430 (Thanks to Alex Parker for the call!)

Snow Bunting - 1 with Linnet flock on scrapes
Hen Harrier - the 2nd cal yr male seen regularly all day
Barn Owl - 3 birds showing well this evening over the reedbed

Does a Black Brant count as a lifer in its own right, separate from a Brent Goose?

depends which authority you follow -- Birding World, UK 400 club Dutch Birding etc all regard it as a good species but BOURC treat it as a race -- you takes your money

I take your point Graham and knowing how these things change (splitting/lumping) on a regular basis I double checked with the BOU official list before replying.

This poses the question which list should we use, that of the BOU or those decided by magazine editors and which authority decides the species that reside on the UK 400 list? I couldn't locate the list used by LBC for Lincolnshire species but I assume it follows that of the BOU.

'you takes your money'
must be

Barton-upon -Humber or Barton-upon-Humber x
Nominate English species
is

'you pays your money' as in 'you pays your money and you takes your choice'.

CID - Cambridge Idioms Dictionary 2nd Edition 2006.
