LRBC October 2009 The following birds are on the LBC database for October 2009 These are ALL description species, and all require a description or photograph for verification. If there is NO description for these birds, then the birds will be removed from the LBC Database, and will not appear in the 2009 report. Andrew, Re the Pallas's Warbler ringed at Donna Nook on 23/10 I would like to make two observations. Firstly, the report appearing on this website came from a third party - the Mid Lincs Ringing Group avoid publicising rarities on our sites for at least 24 hours to prevent unwarranted disturbance that affect our operations. As Pallas's Warbler is not on the BBRC rarity list we have no requirement to inform the LBC as all details are forwarded to the BTO Ringing Office and will appear in the annual Ringing Report. Unlike the multitude of birders with various experience who submit sightings to this Forum, we are a long established Ringing Group who use full wing formulae, full descriptions and photographs to confirm our captures. You can see why we only inform the Ringing Office of "rare birds" and if the LBC Committee chose not to include a 100% certain record that is not a problem - it will be accepted by the BTO and that's all that matters. Stuart. As Pallas's Warbler is a county rarity, then surely there is exactly the same reason for submitting a description to the county as there is for submitting a national rarity to BBRC. On that subject, i see that the Red-flanked Bluetail that was trapped at Crook Bank last year never made it into the BBRC report because,as far as i know, it was never submitted to BBRC. Clearly there is never an absolute obligation to submit descriptions on rarities, but then we could start to get the situation where birds have been accepted by the BTO (is that possible, do they assess rarities - not as far as i know!) and are not on the national record, which would seem to be the case with the bluetail. Perhaps the bluetail has just taken a while to wind its way through the system, and i know that BTO were keen to work closer with BBRC. I'm not trying to be deliberately antagonistic, but i just don't see the point in not submitting details of local rarities to the county. As a ringer presumably interested in the science, you must be able to see the value in having as complete a picture of the counties birds in one place as possible. Admittedly the lack of annual reports over the last few years has gone a long way to causing this scenario, but thats all changing. However, its going to take every birder (and ringer) in the county to make it work. |

Paul, To clarify the position regarding BBRC 'rarities' when trapped. The ringer is required to submit a full description to the BTO, who forward it directly to BBRC to assess. This is clarified on P152 of the Ringers' Manual..........and it also goes on to state that ringers 'are strongly encouraged to submit' reports of such to their County Recorder. I have always done this out of common courtesy and to avoid records being missed out of local birds reports. Alan |

Hi Alan Thats what i thought the case to be, but for some reason only looked at page 102 last night! Interestingly, it actually states in the ringers guide that reports of local rarities do not need to be sent to the Ringing Unit. Which is what i thought was the case after ringing my fair share of national and local rarities on Shetland. Roger - thanks! PF. |

Is it really necessary to request a written description of a bird that is not difficult to identify, has been seen by many and has had numerous clear photos displayed on this very web sight? The Covenham glossy ibis and the Kirkby ring necked duck could surely be accepted just on photographic evidence. Cheers. Rick |

To answer Rick's points; 1) The glossy Ibis is in fact a BBRC bird, so there is nothing for the LBC to do on this bird. However, if there is no description of the bird, then it will not appear in the 2009 BBRC report, let alone the LBC report. (Remember the Steppe Grey Shrike - it is a BBRC bird and NO ONE submitted it to BBRC, in the end it was only accepted on the fact that it had appeared on bird guides. And, the Red-flanked Bluetail mentioned above, which isn't in the BBRC report or LBC report because there is NO description, so there is no future reference for this bird, all trace of its occurance will be lost in a year or two....shame really!) If the county recorder does have a description of the ibis (or the bluetail), then it can be forwarded to BBRC - this is one of the roles of the county bird recorder. 2) The Kirkby Ring-necked Duck might get fast tracked through the system (it is NOT a BBRC species) as it was multi observed, but when the 2009 report is published, it will not have a name against it if there is no description. (I would be happy to write a description for this duck as I did see it, BUT the finder might be a little unhappy, if my name appeared against it in the 2009 report rather than theirs?) It is therefore very important that we have a systematic approach to verification of ALL rare birds occurring in Lincolnshire prior to the production of the annual report. The present system might seem long winded, but it is robust and accountable. I am writing a full account of how we intend to verify birds in the future, which will appear on the forum in the next few days....fingers crossed!! I also hope to announce the publication date for the 2008 bird report in the next week.....we are nearly there! Andrew |

Roy It was Gary (not sure of surname) who rung me and I asked Alex Parker if he wanted to go up and confirm it as I was at work. As soon as I could get off for an early lunch I was there with Alex and Gary, however I know that a report from Gary would not be forthcoming now for months! So whose best to submit report please? I trust the above records for Ross's & Snow Goose, if submitted, will not be treat as genuine wild vagrants in the 2009 bird report (unless can be proved otherwise). I seem to recall reports of both these species on the Humber at previous times in the year and the fact they have been in the company of feral geese can't improve their credentials. regards Chris PS - No disrespect intended to your Ross's Roger - still a nice bird to see, whether its a true vagrant or not. Nearly forgot - female Scaup still on Cleethorpes Boating Lake today |

Thanks John, It was my intention to contact the finder directly to ask if he/she would complete a Rarity Report form for the Ring-necked Duck but, in his absence, it would be perfectly in order for you, or Alex, to complete a form for this bird. As you will see if you download the form, there is a slot for the finders name to be entered but this is not essential, however, if known, it would ensure that the finder was acknowledged in the 2009 bird report.
