Russell,
The other photo in the Album, in a slightly different light, of the single duck (of the two) with the green patch behind the eye and pinkish grey flanks reminds one of drake American Wigeon/ American Wigeon hybrid escapes.

Freddy

American Wigeon did cross my mind but these birds do not seem to have all the features you would expect. As I have not seen another picture showing the same plumage details I will have to assume that they are some sort of American Wigeon/Hybrid, unless anyone knows different?

Take heart, Russell; if it's not Chiloe then they do say that escaped hybrids of Wigeon with S. American Chiloe Wigeon A.sibilatrix can be VERY confusing.

Freddy

Whatever they were, they were different from my limited knowledge of strange looking ducks and have certainly got me scratching my head today.

Thanks all for your helpful comments.
